When you leave your house, you don’t let the door unlocked and hope that someone won’t come in; you lock your door to make sure that nobody can get in. The same applies to your data; to make sure that you and only you have access to it, you should encrypt it. It’s a very good idea to encrypt the files that you want to remain private. The Tropical Software-developed application Private Encryptor can help with that. It is an easy to use encryption tool for Windows that will encrypt anything you want it to encrypt.

Before you can start encrypting your private and sensitive files, you must download and install Private Encryptor on your computer. Both processes will be done before you know it. The 3MB download takes little time to complete on a high-speed internet connection, and so will the installation process, through which you are guided by a setup wizard. Private Encryptor provides support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Access to Private Encryptor is password protected; the default password is “private”. Make sure to change that password the first time you access the application. You won’t have any problems doing that, not when Private Encryptor’s interface is so user friendly. There’s a list of functions right in the middle and big icons at the top. Even a novice computer user will have no problems getting accustomed to the functionality Private Encryptor has to offer.

Speaking about functionality, it must be mentioned that Private Encryptor integrates with Windows Explorer. This means that when you right click a file or a folder, you will see Private Encryptor in the context menu that shows up. Private Encryptor’s functionality is never more than a right click away.

Still speaking about functionality, you can use Private Encryptor to encrypt and decrypt files. On top of that, you can use the application to encrypt email, to backup files and folders, and to shred files and folders. Simply deleting a file does not mean it is gone forever; data recovery tools can bring that file back to life. Private Encryptor’s file shredder makes sure that files are securely deleted, that data recovery tools cannot bring them back.

You have 30 days to try Private Encryptor for free. While using the trial version, you will see ads in the application’s interface.

Private Encryptor will rapidly encrypt and decrypt your files, making it a great tool for anyone who cares about privacy and security. On top of that, it can securely delete files and folders.

Pros

Works with XP, Vista, and Windows 7; simple installation process. Integrates with Windows Explorer. Encrypt and decrypt data, backup data, securely erase data.

Cons

Free to try for a 30-day evaluation period. The interface seems a bit dated. Ad banners displayed by the trial version.
